Applied Animation: Initial Ideas Part 1

So I decided to go with one of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels titled Mort. I chose this book because it is one of my all time favourite stories and I remember being read this story when I was younger and it is a story I have enjoyed reading and re-reading over and over again.

I also chose this story because I feel that there are many possibilities for a number of different ideas that I could explore for this story with it being fictional. I am also really looking forward to the idea of animating and generating an animated title sequence for such a beautiful book. I also chose this book simply because of the characters within the story, as I think they are great. Another reason I chose this book is because it will give me the opportunity to improve on my character design skills.

In terms of how I will approach this I am still in the early stages of deciding which form of animation to use and whether I want to create my own title sequence or whether I want to create a title sequence based on the events at the start of the book. At the moment I'm leaning more towards the latter, as I feel that this kind of story will fit better in a film format rather than a TV series. The story itself is one of fantasy, so I need to think carefully about how I portray this book through my animation. It is also important that I attempt to focus my animation towards a teenage/ young adult audience or the higher end of family audience age 10-80+, as I feel that although some of the books within the Discworld series are aimed more towards children, this particular book is more suited towards that age range. Due to Mort being a fictional story I also need to think very carefully about how I represent this through my title sequence, as it would be important to capture the mood and style of the rest of the story through the first 30 seconds.

At the moment I'm not sure about which method to use. At first I was thinking I could possibly attempt to create this animation in stop motion, however, I feel that I would benefit greatly from this project if I was to use it to improve my overall skills. But, I also would really like to explore stop motion animation some more, as this is something I am really interested in at the moment (oooh decisions). Thinking about forms of animation that would fit the style of Mort, I feel as though digital animation would also be a really nice method because I would be able to create imaginative worlds quite easily and it would also help me to be time efficient, as it is a method I am familiar with. However, I will also be learning how to use 3D animation within this project so I am unsure about whether I would want to use this method above all the others. I know for definite that I don't want to use traditional animation, as I feel that it would match the style or tone of the book as well as other techniques like digital.

I think looking at other fantasy film title sequences would be a good idea and it will help me to gain an understanding of how to approach this.
