Take 5: Animating the Sounds

So we're back to sound because I've been doing a terrible job of keeping up with these blog posts (oops is an understatement).

Once I had experimented with drawing each of the five sounds and I had created the 5 final images that I felt represented the sound well, it was on to animating them. I'm not going to lie, I found this task extremely difficult and frustrating at the best of times and I don't think I've enjoyed it as much as I could have. Despite this though I did give it a good shot and I am pleased with my outcomes, although I feel that I could have done better if I had put more effort into them.

This was the first animation that I created based on my drawings of the 5 sounds and I feel that it is one of my strongest out of the 5, as it clearly represents the sound and I really like the overall aesthetic of the animation. I chose to do it in stop motion because I felt that this was a really good way to show that I was experimenting with different methods, but I also felt that the style suited the sound well too. I feel that I managed to get the timing between the sound and the animation down really well and I feel that this is a really successful representation of my chosen sound.

The second animation, I feel, went just as well as the first animation in terms of the drawing representing the sound well. However, I found this animation a little more difficult to do, as the materials I had chosen to do them with didn't work well together (the water colours made the punch paper crease and crinkle up). Despite this, the paper didn't crinkle up too much and the waves of the paper follow the circumference of the pulsing circle, so it doesn't look all that bad (I'm not sure if I like it though). I'm quite pleased with this result though, but if I were to do it again I might have experimented with adding a background.

Plan of Animation

I feel that this is the weakest of my animations out of the 5. I feel that the colour choice looked good when it was a simple drawing, however, now that it is an animation it reminds me of eggs too much. The animation itself is also offset to the left a lot, which just makes it look untidy and unprofessional. Despite this, I feel that the idea behind the animation was a good one and that the actual movement of the animation works well. If I were to remove the yellow and make the blues bolder, this animation would look a lot better. If I have time I will go back and improve upon it.

Sorry for the poo scan.

This animation was my first attempt at creating the sound visually using digital animation. I feel that this animation is a lot stronger than the last one, as it looks a lot neater and more consideration has gone into the background and the overall aesthetic of the previous animation. Having said this I really struggled with the timing of this animation and no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get the sound and the visuals to synchronize correctly and I feel this lets the animation down a bit. However, the idea is there and I feel that it matches the sound very well, the only issue for me is the syncing of the sound to the visuals.

For this animation I decided to use digital animation, as I felt that this was the best method that linked with the sound. Based on my drawings, I was going to create an animation in which a column of circles pulsed across the page, however, after looking at the image I decided against this and that I should look at creating the column but with it facing forwards. I decided to go with two separate shapes that did the same thing, as I felt that this would help to convey the urgency of the sound across to an audience. I feel that this is again one of my stronger animations but I'm not 100% convinced that the shapes match the sound. It may have been a better idea to make the circles wobbly rather than smooth, as I feel that this would have portrayed the sound better. Another problem is that the last circle on the right object just ever so slightly goes off the screen, which is a disappointment. Despite these flaws however, I do feel that this animation works, but I feel the idea behind the animation was stronger than the outcome.
