Take 5: Komposition in Blau

As part of my exploration into animating sound I wanted to look at a few good examples of animations that do this just this in a very successful manner. Oskar Fischnger created this beautiful animation using stop motion, and I decided to look at it for inspiration, as it I feel that it demonstrates the sounds within the composition extremely well.

I really love the use of the different shapes within the animation and how each shape has been used to represent a corresponding sound. I feel that the shapes go well with the sounds that they represent and this helps to make the animation a success. Not only that but I like the way that Fischinger has used a limited colour pallet, but has still managed to give each sound a different colour to help an audience distinguish the sounds easier.

The movement within the animation beautifully mimics the sounds that are being played to the point where it appears that the shapes are creating the sounds, rather than it appearing that the shapes and the sounds are separate from each other. I really love the way the backgrounds and the shapes change according to the pitch of the music and love how smoothly the whole animation flows.

Komposition in Blau has influenced me to very carefully consider movement within my own animations and to think carefully about how colour, style and method will affect the outcome of the animation. I really want to be able to create a harmony between my sounds and my drawings similar to how Fischinger has done here, as I feel that this is a very good example of animated sound.
