Take 5: Feedback

Today we were given the chance to show our peers the animations that we had created for the visualising sound task we were given a couple of weeks back. For a start I didn't have all of my animations with me, so my organisation and preparation skills need to improve for the next time, as it meant that I lost valuable feedback for my last two animations.

Despite this, I did get some very good constructive feedback for the three animations that I was able to show.

For the first sound I showed I received some very positive feedback about my timing and the method I had chosen to use for this sound. The majority of the class agreed with my colour choice and liked that I had used alternating coloured chalk sticks for the sound. However, there were a few people who thought that the brighter yellow should have been used for the sound rather than the background, but I feel that this combination works well and represents the sound well. Despite that this as successful in representing the sound, there are still some things that could be improved. In particular, my peers pointed out that the smudge marks the chalk sticks leave behind don't particularly fit with the sound. Instead, I should have made the marks more dominant and made it so that there was a definite mark upon the page, or I should have made sure there were no marks at all. I think based on these comments and reflecting upon the sound itself, I'd want to make sure there was a definite mark left behind, as the sound reminds me of footsteps, and I feel that this would work well with the sound.

For the second sound there was a lot more constructive feedback than the last sound and I'm grateful that people were willing to tell me so. The colour scheme of the animation worked well and people liked the way I represented the sound and thought that I had successfully captured the mood, tone and style of the sound. However, I did fail to represent the "bubbling" sound that went alongside the pulsing sounds. If I were to do this sound again I would change the blue line within the animation and make it represent the "bubbling" sound more coherently. Another improvement that was suggested was experimenting with different background colours. I feel that this would add to the animation if I found the right sound. However, I'd have to change the material I have used, as the punch hole paper wouldn't be appropriate for water colours. A final improvement would be to improve on my planning to ensure that my animation was centred rather than offset to the left.

Out of all the animations I have shown today, I feel that this was my weakest, as the colours weren't as bold and the amount of effort put into it didn't seem to be as apparent than in the others. One of the main improvements that was pointed out by my peers was the use of colour. The colour scheme within this animation doesn't seem to work as well as the previous ones and I think it's because of the yellow orb in the centre. If I removed this and then made my lines bolder, I feel that it would work a lot better. Another suggestion was made about how big I made the outer circle when the movement expanded. Because the sound doesn't return to the exact same volume or pitch each time, I should have made the circles a different size each time rather than returning to the same size. I could also benefit from making the lines of the circles sharper and more rigid as the sound gets louder and intensifies. I also need to think about planning again, as this animation is also off centre.

Overall, I feel that I have received some really helpful constructive criticism that will help me to improve for the next task that we do.
